Spring is in the air, and we feel like celebrating. But sometimes, the after-effects of celebration can be painful. Cure what ails you with a hearty hangover brunch, rib-sticking Sicilian cuisine, a hot cup of deep black Joe, and more.
Put this diner on your radar: Sequoia Diner is projected to open in the Laurel District this May. The project is from Andrew Vennari (former line cook at Camino and sous chef at Duende) and his wife, Sequoia Broderson. The pair will serve breakfast and lunch, and will make as much as possible in-house (bread, pastries, jam, bacon, and sausages) from local, sustainable ingredients. There will also be weekend brunch, beer, and wine.

James Syhabout has been busy opening the SF outpost of Hawker Fare, but that hasn't slowed him down in Oakland: The chef is now serving al fresco Sunday brunch at The Beer Shed at Linden Street Brewery, fittingly called The Hangover Brunch. Curative dishes include an al pastor pork chop torta on challah bread; grillled asparagus with a poached egg, salsa verde, and fried bread crumbs; and James's Breakfast, two poached eggs with soy sauce, white pepper, and scallions, served with grilled pain de mie soldiers. Needless to say, drinks will be flowing, too (oh hello, horchata rum milk punch).
Sometimes, you need a little spice to kick that hangover to the curb. Meet Bombay B's Indian Bistro, a street food cafe-slash-wine bar, now open in Uptown Oakland. Dishes include Bay Area-laced takes on North Indian cuisine—think krispy kale pakoras and naan pizzas (available in the evenings only)—plus more traditional curry dishes and combinations. Complementary wine pairings and beer curb the heat.
Of course, sometimes only pizza will do. Beloved Piedmont Avenue restaurant Dopo has undergone a concept revamp, emerging as Palmento a Dopo, a Sicilian restaurant serving antipasti, wines, and, happily, Dopo's beloved thin crust pizza and lasagnette.

Comfort yourself with a cup of coffee at the newly opened Modern Coffee in Uptown Oakland. The stunning space was designed and renovated by Arcsine, and features Modern Coffee's top notch selection of beans, teas, and fresh, local treats. Damn good coffee. Damn good.
