On the Runway: Art Institute’s Fashion Metamorphosis Show

By

That fashion wouldn’t be fashion without change (both the temporal kind and lots and lots of the coin variety) would be reason enough for the Art Institute of California to develop its summer fashion show taking place this Saturday night around the idea of metamorphosis. But consider that the fashion industry itself is in a state of flux this year quite unlike we’ve seen before (Lacroix bankrupt! Jimmy Choo for H&M! Dolce & Gabbana slashes prices!), and the word is all the more fitting a label for this year’s deployment of student collections down the runway.

Saturday’s Fashion Metamorphosis show features some 100 looks from 25 student designers charged with designing fashion with the changing future in mind. Students will be judged by a panel that includes Stephanie Verrieres of Verrieres & Sako and Melissa Leventon of the Museum of Performance and Design. Expect everything from outerwear inspired by 1940’s Hollywood to show-girl costumes, wedding attire to lingerie, children’s apparel to menswear by participating designers such as Jordan Alexandra Saenz, Erik Stultz, Rachel Richardson, Chadae Frank and Dora Un.

Audience members with proclivities for reality television should also keep their eyes trained on the runway for a glimpse of America’s Next Top Model cycle 11 contestant Marjorie, who we understand now makes her home in San Francisco.

Fashion Metamorphosis takes place Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the San Francisco Design Center, 101 Henry Adams St. For advance tickets (general admission $20, VIP $50) call 415-276-1069 or 415-276-1011. Tickets will be available for $25 at the door.
