Step inside newly re-launched King Street salon Vim and Vigor, and the first thing you’re likely to notice about the club-like interiors are walls strewn with what, from afar at least, appear to be undulating tendrils of hair. But take a few steps closer, and you’ll find the swirling lines are actually mane-like fibers embedded in the walls. And thank the styling gods for that. The real deal could easily have had the unintended effect of creeping us out long before we were able to learn about the salon’s all-star team of stylists, trendy Brazilian Blowout service and signature cutting technique.

Formerly Re:Do, the salon from Tan Bella founders Greg Murray and Peter Popejevalo boasts a three-pronged team of pros wielding the shears. Heading up the salon’s new cutting and color education programs are Garret Hamabata, who earned his chops at respected Los Angeles salons Gavert Atelier and Tom Brophy, and Beverly Zunke, a Vidal Sassoon-trained stylist who spent the last four years managing education for the company that makes Goldwell and KMSCA products. Joining them is Ash Lopez, an alum of Gavert Atelier and Umberto salons in Beverly Hills, and an expert in administering Brazilian Blowouts, the latest celebrity hair craze.

Touted as the only hair-straightening technique out there today that is beneficial to hair, the “blowout” is a chemical process with accompanying blow dry that takes up to two hours and promises to turn curly or wavy hair straight and frizz-free for up to four months.

Along with standard cut ($65 and up for men, $75 and up for women) and color services ($55 and up), the salon stands out for using a wet-dry cutting technique.

“Our cutting style is really unique….part of the cut they do wet, and part of the cut they do dry, which is great because it allows the stylist to really customize the hair cut to the particular client,” says co-owner Murray.

Sharing space with the salon is the SoMa outpost of Tan Bella, which offers both spray in upright booths and UV tanning.
