If we were to tell you that you could procure organic beauty products for less than you can buy them off the shelf and diminish your impact on the environment at the same time, you’d probably want in.
We certainly did when we happened upon Green 11, tucked away in the Secret Flower Garden off Union Street in Cow Hollow. Set to softly open a second, larger Noe Valley location over the course of the next week, the local company dispenses eco-friendly beauty, household, laundry and pet bath products from EO Products, Ecco Bella, Kiss My Face, Shikai, Trillium Organics and others into any refillable containers customers bring to the store. Containers are weighed before and after you fill up, so you only pay for the price of the products themselves, all of which are either certified organic according to USDA standards or come from vendors that have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics.
“It really makes high-quality, organic products available to a larger market. Organic ingredients are more expensive. Organic products, in general, are more expensive. We make that organic product cheaper, and that means a wider variety of people can afford it,” says Bettina Limaco, who opened the first Green 11 outpost with husband Marco Pietschmann in April.
Buying in bulk and dispensing into customers’ own containers allows the shop to charge less, ounce-for-ounce, than other retail and online outlets, says Limaco, who estimates a bottle of organic shampoo, body lotion or bath gel will cost 25 percent less at Green 11.
If you don’t have suitable empty containers to start off with, never fear. The shop’s soon-to-open Noe Valley location (3980 24th St.) will offer basic containers for first-time fillups.
