When was the last time you went for a run to help a distressed pinniped? If you raised a flipper, then you’ve most likely put some miles in on behalf of the Marine Mammal Center.
This year’s Run for the Seals—think Bay to Breakers with less booze, more running, and dogs(!)—aims to get one human to run for every seal saved in 2015. The goal requires at least 1,500 participants, so be sure to invite your friends (both two- and four-legged are welcome).
Open to runners and walkers of all ages, including runners in costume (and yes, there will be a contest), participants will be treated to complimentary food, drinks, and tours at the Marine Mammal Center one you've crossed the finish line.
The route options are:
- 5k Run: a road and dirt track route through the headlands (hilly in parts). Certified by the USATF (CA15041RS).
- 2-Mile Walk: a scenic route overlooking the ocean for those who want a shorter but challenging hike/walk with dazzling views, refreshments, and education stations along the way.
Competitive runners will start in the first wave, slightly less ambitious runners, walkers and runners with dogs will start in a second wave. Check in is 6:30am at which time the roads close for the race start at 8:30am.
How to Get There
1. Take the Alexander Ave. exit from Hwy. 101 just north of Vista Point and the Golden Gate Bridge.
2. Head towards Sausalito and make the first left after the road cuts onto Danes Dr.
3. Go through the tunnel on Bunker Rd. for three miles, veering to the right as Bunker Rd. rises away from the Lagoon.
4. The Marine Mammal Center will be on your right.
As the race map below indicates, the course goes up Old Bunker Rd. and loops down to Rodeo Beach by Battery Townsley, a hike we profiled two years ago on 7x7.
