Hot on the heels of a new album and tour, comedienne and social provocateur Sandra Bernhard returns to San Francisco for a performance at this year’s PG&E-sponsored VIP Pride Party at the Bentley Reserve on June 23rd. Here, a quick Q&A:
7x7: What’s your best memory of past Pride celebrations?
SB: I’d have to say that it’s a collective memory really, of where we’ve been and how far we’ve come.
7x7: What sets SF’s Pride celebration apart from other cities’?
SB: San Francisco is the spiritual homeland to everyone out on the fringe, who celebrates the madness and joy of being an original thinker. It's the city we all make our pilgrimage to, the dream that goes on forever.
7x7: What was the inspiration for your newest album I Love Being Me, Don’t You?
SB: Tapping into the source—San Francisco, the Castro Theatre, drag queens outside my dressing room, throwing caution to the wind, and taking in the love of a crowd.
7x7: Proceeds from the event will go toward the Victory Fund, an organization that helps put more openly gay leaders in positions of government. Why are causes like the Victory Fund so important to support?
SB: To fight ignorance and fear, to have an informed voice in the American conversation. To go from being marginalized to standing shoulder to shoulder to the decision makers.
