Scenes of the City: The San Francisco Marathon

By

For this week's Scenes of the City we got up early (4:30 am) on Sunday morning and made our way down to the Embarcadero to capture the SF Marathon.

Two runners take a moment to stretch and appreciate the early morning scenery.

Elite runner and Olympic qualifier Michael Wardian crosses the finish line in about 2 1/2 hours to win the overall marathon.

Early morning spectators gather on the Embarcadero to catch the run.

The San Francisco Boys Choir sing the national anthem.

The elite runner blast off of the starting line at 5:30 am on the dot.

More spectators watching the river of runners pass along the Embarcadero.

Hundreds of finishers medals hang waiting to be distributed to the participants.

Further down the Embarcadero more spectators watch the flow of runners.

Thousands (5920 to be exact) of runners make their way down the Embarcadero.

5K participant "Chuckwagon" spots us getting a pic of he and his tutu.

The elite runners warm up before the race, on the right in the foreground tying his shoe is overall winner Michael Wardian and behind him is the women's winner Emily Field (#95).

An arch of balloons strung together hangs over the festivities along the waterfront.

One of the early finishers crosses the finish line about a quarter mile south on the Embarcadero from where the race began.
