If San Francisco’s most fashionable enclaves seemed a little deserted over the last two weeks, it’s for good reason. Not a few fashion-minded Left Coasters flocked east for New York Fashion Week, and we’ve been eating up their electronic missives from under the tents ever since.
For a Fashion Week redux with a San Francisco perspective, we turn to a few of our favorite local fashion sources for the skinny:
Jennie of Going West had a whirlwind spin through New York, which culminated in a photo shoot at Bryant Park and the discovery of two new bags she didn’t know she had – too bad they were under her eyes.
SF Indie Fashion contributor Michelle chronicles her experiences as a first-timer at Fashion Week in a diary series on the site this week. In the first installment, she manages to upgrade from standing room to a seat at Georges Chakra just by asking sweetly, falls in love with the collection at the Twinkle by Wenlan show and breaks for a few cosmos.
The scene backstage before the Academy of Art show (the only school with a runway show during New York Fashion Week, by the way) went from relatively relaxed, as student designers steamed and perfected their garments, to packed with press in a matter of minutes.
The Finer Dandy exposes on of Fashion Week’s rarely-discussed hazards: the porto-potties of Bryant Park. Yes, the most fashionable folks in the nation, dressed to the nines, have to relieve themselves in portable toilets during the shows. Wonder if they have purse hooks?
Bare events coordinator Seika Iwao yawns over the Erin Wasson x RVCA collection, but is buoyed by celeb sightings, including Ke$ha sans pants. Later, she catches a Patti Smith show at Milk Gallery and learns that the New York subway can, in fact, be a fashionable girl’s best friend.
Buyers from San Francisco boutique Metier check out the scene at the Zero by Maria Cornejo show and enjoy the relaxed vibe of a smaller-scale production. Later, the team revels in the disco-punk offerings of the 3.1 by Phillip Lim show under the Bryant Park tents and, afterward, snaps a shot of The Sartorialist outside.
