San Francisco may no longer have a fashion week of its own, but the City by the Bay will at least be well-represented under the Bryant Park tent on Saturday, when seven recent graduates of the Academy of Art present Spring 2010 womenswear collections during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.
A few things you need to know about each:
Amanda Cleary: Inspired by packaging, this MFA Fashion Design student and native Californian incorporated box tab and cut out detailing into her collection.
Sawanya Jomthepmala: Glass mosaics found in Thai Buddhist temples, Krathong boats made of intricately folded banana leaves and 1950’s silhouettes are among the influences driving this MFA Fashion and Textile Design student’s collection.
Brittney Major: Preppy with an unconventional twist is the idea behind this MFA Fashion Design graduate’s bright plaids.
Jie Pan: Contrast is the crux of this MFA Fashion Design student’s collection, which features such unexpected pairings as horsehair and silk chiffon alongside defined shoulders and flowing skirts.
Marina Nikolaeva Popska: Employing multiple techniques to create her uniquely-patterned garments yields the rich textures and optical illusions at play in this MFA Fashion and Knitwear Design student’s collection.
Kara Sennett: Wool and vinyl collide in this MFA Fashion Design gradudate’s collection, inspired by David Hockney’s 1966 painting Beverly Hills Housewife.
Richelle Valenzuela: Silk and satin-faced organza in subdued slate blue and gunmetal gray offset the folds and undulating silhouettes of this MFA Fashion Design student’s intricate, labor-intensive designs.
You may not be able to attend the show in person, but you can dial into the action by checking in with the school’s Fashion School Daily blog and following via Twitter for live updates before, during and after the show.
