Stereolab: One band you'll definitely find at Camino.
I’ve no doubt that you faithful Hot List readers have been on the edge of your seats, waiting with baited breath to see the results of the Great Mix-Off © of 2007. The reason I know this, of course, is that one of you—one of you who goes by the name of “Pocket Rocket” and clearly has a vested interest in the results of this contest—commented as much on my first blog entry.
Well Christmas has come early, my friends, because I’m here to leak the tracklists of both compilations. Though a winner has yet to be crowned, I thought it only fitting that you be the first to know what we came up with, so that you can judge for yourself who should be pronounced the victor—myself, or my worthy opponent Chris P. Rocket.
But before you scroll down, let me share a little about my own mix. Though I’ve spent a lot of time complaining about restaurant music, I haven’t spent a lot of time putting together a mix for a restaurant, and found it was even harder than I suspected. There was some ego-checking to do. I had to ask myself on more than one occasion: “Are you putting this song on here for the right reasons (because it will add enjoyment to the meal)? Or are you including it for the wrong ones (because you really like it and want to get credit for knowing about it before it gets popular)? Many a track was crossed off the list at the last minute because it was a case of the latter. Additionally, each song had to blend into the next so as to keep the flow of the meal in tact (sorry Al Green’s fantastic cover version of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” There was just too much chitchat going on at the beginning. Apologies dear, sweet Hot Chip—aka one of my favorite bands of all time—you just didn’t fit in with the rest of the mix with your low, low vocals and genius electro sound). Needless to say, I think we’ve all learned a lot from this exercise. Not the least of which is that when you’re making a mix for a restaurant, you absolutely must include a track from Stereolab (See, Chris? We’re not so different after all).
