What's in your Bay, style consultant Lisa Raja?

By

More than two decades ago, Lisa Raja took a “magical” trip to San Francisco. Not long after, she packed her (chic) bags and moved to the city—sans job or friends.

Today, the style consultant and “boy mom,” who was born in Paris and raised in Houston, resides in the Oakland Hills with her husband and kids, enjoying quite the happy Bay Area life.

On the professional front, her career has been grounded in fashion and retail. “I’ve been an analyst, buyer, merchandiser, corporate retailer, startup retailer, and boutique owner,” says Raja. But currently, she’s relishing her role as an independent style coach and consultant, offering a hybrid service that helps women develop an individual sense of style while also building self-confidence.

“There’s something so rewarding for me when I see a woman realize her full potential,” Raja explains. “When she's transformed by clothes she loves and feels good putting on her body, it's a beautiful thing to witness. I’m lucky to be a part of that journey.”

Naturally, Raja has impeccable style and knows a thing or two about where to shop. When we asked what's in her Bay, she spilled some fashion secrets along with her favorite local spots for food and fun.

What's the best place to score fashion deals?

The Livermore Outlets [technically called San Francisco Premium Outlets; Livermore Outlets Dr.). OMG, so good! The best brands and great prices.

What do you love most about your neighborhood?

I have lived in the Oakland Hills for the past six years. I love that it's so peaceful. The hiking trails are my favorite thing. I can walk to the grocery store and dry cleaners (even though I drive), but I also feel like I live in a rural area at times. It’s such a magical combination!

What's your favorite local brand?

Erica Tanov never disappoints. The Darby Pant might be the greatest pant of all time.

Do you have a favorite unexpected shopping haunt?

TJ Maxx The Runway...people always laugh when I say that. Specifically the Orinda location (472 Center St., Moraga), as not all Runway departments are created equal; some are better than others. This one is sooo good for deals. I care less about "fall 2025" or what’s new, and more about getting amazing brands and styles that look good for a deal.

Do you have a place you usually take out-of-towners?

College Avenue in Rockridge is my East Bay happy place. It's a wonderful place to take guests for shops, restaurants, and boutiques. Plus, it’s a true representation of Oakland and its vibe. And people always enjoy Market Hall (5655 College Ave.)—and usually pick up some yummy edible goodies to take home.

What's your absolute favorite place to shop?

I love Maison D'etre on College Ave. They have unique finishing pieces for your wardrobe and your home.

What’s your favorite restaurant?

Wood Tavern on College Ave. It's my version of Cheers—where everybody knows your name (LOL). It has the best food, the most incredible service, and the best crowd. It perfectly exemplifies all the “flavor” Oakland offers.

Favorite staycation spot?

I’m all about Oakland pride so, naturally, it's the Claremont (41 Tunnel Rd.). The hotel’s Limewood Bar & Restaurant is gorgeous, especially if you sit on the patio and stare out at the epic view.

Do you have a go-to brunch place?

The Montclair Egg Shop (6126 Medau Pl., Oakland)the potato-ham pancake is my fave!

What day trip do you never tire of?

So predictable, but it's Napa or Calistoga: I feel at peace in both places. Between hot springs, caviar on a retired train, hot-air ballooning, and bike riding, it really feels like a vacation.
