The Best Tracks of 2008 (Bay Area Edition)

By

'Tis the season for "best of" music lists around the web. We've got one of our own to add to the mix - our roundup of what we think are the seven best songs to come out of the Bay Area this year. So listen up, and then go out and support these bands immediately. (Read: catch them before they're playing mega tours and you're paying stupid ticket prices to support things like light shows, pyrotechnics and RVs).

Here's the list.

Port O'Brien "I Woke Up Today"

Why we're into it: Relatively new on the scene, this Oakland group has drawn comparisons to Arcade Fire. "I Woke Up Today" sounds a bit like tools and objects dropping on the floor of some mechanic's garage, combined with the kind of chanting and strumming perfect for a folksy hoedown in Golden Gate Park.

The Dodos "Fools"

Why we're into it: It's seriously impressive that such a big sound is coming from only two lads. Here, percussive drums meld with drumstick clicks, clacks, and rumbles for a unique freak-folk experience.

The Morning Benders "Damnit Anna"

Why we're into it: A lot has happened for this band in 2008, and we see stars on the horizon for 2009. They just locked up the iTunes best independent album of the year. Obvious Beatles undertones, and the perfect indie blockbuster.

Lilofee "Lock and Key"

Why we're into it: New band Lilofee features vets of the local music scene (Every Move A Picture). The hook here will definitely get the kids singing. It's She Wants Revenge with a hint of Interpol and a bit of Peaches, only less raunchy.

Loquat "Sit Sideways"

Why we're into it: Vocalist Kylee Swenson sings with an ethereal, lullaby voice reminiscent of Aimee Mann and Feist, only less drone-y and with lyrics that seem meant for some secret journal.

The Ferocious Few "Crazy Love"

Why we're into it: It's like Jack White meeting Johnny Cash in some dim-lit back alley.

Aidan Hawken "Shut Me Out"

Why we're into it: Resurrecting the melancholy of Elliot Smith in combination with Rogue Wave-style melodies, this breakup song pulls at the heart strings.
