Believe it or not, Shakespeare was writing about real people - and people haven’t changed that much in the last five-hundred years. We still love, we still lose, we still act like unrelenting jerks, we still wonder who we are, we still get back up after falling and do it all over again.
Nationally renowned playwright-director Amanda Dehnert makes her Cal Shakes debut with a punk tribute to Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona. The Verona Project is as much a band as it is a play, with more instruments than actors, and a story that owes as much to modern life and fairytale as it does to Shakespeare. With the gleeful wattage of a rock concert and Dehnert’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s cutting wisdom, The Verona Project is a fresh take on the tale of two best friends, the girl they both want, and the adults they all quickly become.
Through July 31. Cal Shakes, Bruns Ampitheater, 100 California Shakespeare Theater Way, Orinda. Tickets are $35-66 at 510-548-9666 or calshakes.org.
