Deeply embedded in the local dance scene, choreographers Todd Eckert (a member of Robert Moses’ Kin) and Nol Simonse (a dancer with Janice Garrett and Kunst-Stoff) return to Dance Mission Theater with lively and appealing new work, featuring greek goddesses and twelfth century poetry schemas. Your bachelor of arts degree will be so proud.
Eckert’s world premiere Sinfonia is set to six Bach sonatas - chosen and recorded by collaborators American Bach Soloists - and choreographed based on a sestina. If you missed Medieval Lit 101, that’s a twelfth Century poetry form with six, six-line stanzas with the same set of six words ending each line. Following this formal structure, Eckert will create a dance equivalent for each of the six repeating words and meld them together in sestina form.
Simonse’s world premiere is based on the myth of the Greek goddess Demeter, who pits compassion against apathy and, luckily, compassion wins. Multiple dancers will play the goddess, who does her goddess thing to classical and contemporary music.
