Oakland's vibrant culture and busy port are getting recognition from an unlikely source: the U.S. Navy.
Naval Secretary Ray Mabus announced at the A's game on Wednesday that the Navy's newest warship will be named the USS Oakland. And it makes sense. Oakland is home to the busiest port in Northern California, and the fifth busiest container port in the United States.
Construction of the littoral combat ship by shipbuilder Austal is set to begin in November 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2018.
According to the Navy Times, there have been two other naval ships named the USS Oakland. The first was a cargo ship commissioned in 1918. The second ship with the name was an Atlanta-class light cruiser that was in service during World War II.
Cheers to you, Oakland.
