Maceo Parker, the alto sax legend who's played funk with the best of them—James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins—is bringing his red-hot licks and slinky, fluid style to the afterparty for this year's Freedom in the Groove SFJAZZ Gala. Last year's soiree attracted the likes of Dave Chappelle, Terrence Howard, Amy Tan, Robert Redford, McCoy Tyner, Charlie Musselwhite, and Herbie Hancock. Next week's gala promises even more opportunity for celebrity sightings because there's a big reason to celebrate: The organization has completed its $63 million capital campaign for the highly anticipated SFJAZZ Center concert hall scheduled to open MLK Day next year. So, if you can't splurge for a ticket to the gala but still want to get in on the action, leave a comment below about your first experience with Maceo Parker, and you'll get the chance to win a pair of tickets to this exclusive after jam concert.
10:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m., Fri. 5/4; Bimbo's 365 Club, 1025 Columbus Ave., sfjazz.org
