Anyone who has spent time at Zeitgeist knows the only thing harder than getting the bartender to notice you in the sea of a Bloody Mary thirsty crowd is to find a place to lock your bike. With limited pole space outside and only a few hooks inside, finding a place to tie up your steed can be challenging. But not to worry, bike and booze fans, Zeitgeist recently got a new, improved and HUGE bike corral!

The bike-centric bar had a much smaller corral last year, but it only held 9 bikes and did little to help with the bike overflow parking problem. This new corral, housed on Duboce Street, can hold up to 22 bikes!

On-street bike corrals are popping up all over San Francisco; there are now 26 citywide, and more on the way. It’s a simple design: The City turns a single car parking space into a space that holds a dozen bikes (Zeitgeist’s is double size), puts up a few posts to protect the corral, installs a series of u-racks, and voila—massive bike parking!

All totaled, the City has turned 30 single car parking spaces into 336 bike parking spaces. A much-needed corral was just installed in front of Pizzeria Delfina on 18th Street and another in front of its fellow 18th Street neighbor, Bi-Rite Creamery.

Corrals aren’t just great for bike riders, they’re also great for pedestrians. When bike parking is moved to the street, sidewalks are opened up for people walking. On cramped business corridors like 18th Street, removing bikes from the sidewalks makes a huge difference in traffic flow.

If you’re a business owner and want a corral, you can request one from the city. The process is really simple and a great way to encourage more people to bike to your business. The City will install the corral and as a business owner, you just have to make sure it’s clean of debris. If you’re a customer and see a place that could use a corral, let them know that it’s easy to get one.

And next time you head to Zeitgeist on a sunny day, park your bike in their new fancy corral. It beats hanging it on the window grates.
